Storm Team 2
On Friday we visited the Storm Team 2 studio in Mount Pleasant, SC. As a culminating event of our Weather study, it couldn’t be beat. Meteorologist Rob Fowler gave us a tour of the weather center where he broadcasts low country weather daily. Students learned how meteorologists are able to predict the weather, and they got to experiment with an anemometer to measure the wind. The most exciting part though, was when students got to stand by the green screen and report the weather just like real meteorologists!
Science
This week our study of solids and liquids took a new turn: solid particles. We got our hands on corn meal, mung beans, rice, pinto beans, and lima beans to see how differently sized particles behaved. We used screens to sort them by size, and put them in bottles to see how they would mix when shaken or rolled. Our students love to get their hands on science materials, and the Solids and Liquids unit is a great one for new discoveries!
Writing
One of the most exciting and fun aspects of our Author Expert project is that students get to create stories in the style of their mentor authors. From Mo Willems to Mary Pope Osborne, students study the settings, characters, problems, and solutions of their mentor authors as they prepare to write. First Graders are currently finishing the editing process and will begin working on final copies next week. We can’t wait to share our work with TCS families.
