We have begun an exciting new project in 5th grade! Your leaders have spent the week creating math tutorials for our TCS YouTube channel. This process requires students to use the program One Note to draw out an example math problem. Then, we use QuickTime Player on the computer to “screen record” what they are drawing. After we record their math problem, we import it into iMovie and add titles, transitions, and narration. We can’t wait to publish all of our math and technology knowledge!
Your mathematicians began Unit 7 this week and received their new, fresh Math Journals. We love a good fresh start! This unit launches with lessons about exponential notation, powers of 10, and standard notation. All of these are ways for mathematicians and scientists to represent very large numbers without having to write every digit. Students learned that the large number at the bottom is the base number, the smaller number at the top is the exponent, and the exponent tells you how many times to multiply the base number times itself. For example, 45 = 4x4x4x4x4 = 1,024. A common mistake is to multiply 4×5 = 20, so we were extra focused to make sure we didn’t make that mistake in our work!
Thank you so much for joining us at the Circular Church on Monday for the Valentine’s Concert. It is the first concert I have attended in my 5 years at TCS that was off-campus, and I thought it was amazing! Your musicians blow me away every time. The talent that is in our class is astounding. Their ability to play multiple instruments, sing solos in front of large crowds with confidence, and harmonize with others is unmatched. You should be very proud of their efforts and accomplishments!
