Writing

Third Graders began their nonfiction-writing unit this week! The Art of Informational Writing allows students to become the teachers and write about a topic they know a lot about. Students have chosen to write about sports, pets, volcanoes, birds, and so much more. The beginning of this unit has been about the importance of organization and setting yourself up for success. In this unit students will be writing a Table of Contents, planning the best order to write in, and discussing what they are going to write until they feel ready to burst with all the information.

Vocabulary

Third Graders love learning new vocabulary words! Our Vocabulary Workshop works on a two-week cycle that introduces 10-12 new words in the context of a story or article. Students then work with, study, and explore those words in a multitude of ways, from direct instruction to reading, writing, acting, and drawing. By the end of the two weeks, students are familiar with the words and often begin to use them in their writing and speech. You can support your Third Grader by using their words in everyday speech and encouraging them to do the same!

Community Change Makers

Third Graders have enjoyed learning more about their change makers this week.  They have been using nonfiction books, articles, and the internet for their research.  Students compiled all of their facts, wrote a paragraph, and created a timeline about their change maker.  Make sure you ask your child what they have learned!! This is definitely an exciting study for Third Grade!
