This Week in First Grade!

Sharing our opinions!

This week first grade writers continued their new opinion writing unit.  We worked on how to write an opinion and how to make it more convincing! Writers learned the importance of making their opinions stronger by providing not just one, but LOTS of reasons! We shared our thoughts during an opinion battle on “pepperoni vs. cheese pizza”! Ask your child what their opinion is on the battle– they were very convincing!

Did you know?

Did you know that there are 8 biomes in the world? And Australia has three out of the eight biomes in the world? This week first graders turned their focus from biomes of the world to biomes in Australia! After first graders located Australia on the map we learned what 3 biomes it has and what animals live there! We love learning about a new continent!

Syllable Experts!

First graders worked hard to break words into syllables during our Phonics lessons this week! Our strong readers learned that syllables help us break longer words into smaller parts.  We also learned about open and closed syllables and how they change the sound of a vowel.  Our tricky word detectives were excited to add another tool to their reading toolbox!
