Turning the Page, Starting a New Chapter!

I found this quote this week and I wanted to share, “There comes a day where you realize turning the page is the best feeling in the world, because you realize there is so much more to the book than the page you were stuck on.” – Zayn Malik

I don’t know about you but this quote seems really relevant to me this week. It is really nice to close out on our first few units, and it is very exciting to turn the page and start fresh on something new! Even if the beginning of this school year was a little different than any other start to a school year, it feels nice to turn the page and start fresh!

Middle schoolers have been plugging away and working hard to complete the units that we have been working on since the beginning of the school year. It feels nice to have a change with some incoming and new concepts! It feels as if we have all hit the ground running and it is smooth sailing as we round this first corner! Can you believe this trimester is almost over?

What’s happening in Science:

Smokey convection chambers, radiant energy experiments, and full moon demonstrations were some of our highlights this week in science! We are really getting into the fundamentals of weather and climate and we will be prepared to start our climate change projects after Fall Break. Middle School scientists enjoyed a brain break making catapults this week during centers. Many ditched the blueprints and created their own inventions.

What’s going on in Writing:

This week writers finished their narrative unit by completing their Narrative Writing On-Demand, and did their pre-assessment Writing On-Demand for our second unit! Informational writing! Writers got to research about the controversy of bottled tap water, then we practiced researching student activist Malala Yousafzai!

Math:

Fifth Graders prepped and reviewed for their module 1 unit test! After making study guides and looking over objectives to come up with their own test questions, we made a review guide together for them to work on independently. During centers, students got to compete against their classmates in a friendly review game of Kahoot. Students had a great time testing their skills! Thursday was the test, now we are cruising into Module 2!

Sixth graders made corrections on their mid-module assessments and have been working hard to find the value of ratios in correlation to fractions and plotting these on the coordinate grid to make sense of word problems!
