We Are Writers!

Busy Writers Plan Across Pages
Kindergarten writers are off and running! This week our youngest writers discovered that when writing teaching books, sometimes everything they want to say won’t quite fit onto one page. Students learned that they can add pages to their writing using our class stapler! Kindergarten writers were also introduced to pre-stapled books and learned a strategy that writers use to plan their writing across pages when writing teaching books. Young writers spent time with their writing partners rehearsing and telling information that they planned to write on each page. This oral language rehearsal with partners not only helps kids clarify and think about what they are going to write but also helps them generate more content. Bravo, young writers. Bravo!

Mystery Reader
We were so excited to welcome our first Mystery Reader this week! Caught completely by surprise, Kindergarteners received a special visit from one of their parents with a book in hand. After 3 clues, students were able to solve the mystery and welcome our guest, who just so happened to have The Book With No Pictures in hand. Students could not control their laughter and so many of them told us later that this visit was their ‘apple’, the sweetest part of their day!

Brain Science
Students spent the week discussing the brain and what controls different parts of their body. We talked about the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex. Students focused on the prefrontal cortex and its effect on having a calm mindset for thoughtful decision-making. Kindergarteners related to one another by all having remembered a time where their feelings were hurt and then discussed different calming strategies for when they are feeling upset. We are so proud of our brave and growing Kindergarteners.
