The Cooper School Daily

Week of February 13th

We had a fun-filled week in First Grade! Highlights of this week included a visit from Peace Culture Music, the Valentine’s Day festival, and our field trip to the Gibbes. Read on for an inside look at this week in First Grade.

Peace Culture Music

On Monday, First Graders expanded on their Australia study by learning about Australian musical instruments and cultural traditions. Local musician, Daniel Scruggs, shared a collection of objects utilized by the Aboriginal people of Australia including a didgeridoo, a boomerang, a painted stone, and a bull horn. Below, students utilize rhythm sticks to keep time with the sounds of the didgeridoo.

Valentine’s Day

On Valentine’s Day our students enjoyed exchanging Valentines with their classmates, reading their compliment books, working in fun Valentine themed centers, and attending the Bake Sale, Book Fair, and Bingo event! Below, students explore the book displays at the Scholastic Book Fair.

Field Trip to the Gibbes Museum

On Wednesday, First Graders explored the galleries of the Gibbes Museum in order to select an art piece to review for our Critical Writing unit. Students enjoyed learning about a variety of artistic styles including portraits, landscapes, and sculptures. Below, a student views the famous Jonathan Green painting “Corene”.
