At our school, we pride ourselves on fostering a dynamic and adaptable curriculum that responds to our students’ ever-evolving interests and needs. We understand that each group of students brings their unique passions, experiences, and learning styles to the classroom, and we strive to create a learning environment that empowers them to take ownership of their education.

One of the hallmarks of our approach is our commitment to providing students with agency in their learning journey. When students can explore topics that resonate with them, they are more engaged, motivated, and invested in their learning. Whether delving into the wonders of space exploration, investigating the impact of climate change on local ecosystems, or exploring the rich history and culture of different regions worldwide, our projects are as diverse and dynamic as the students who undertake them. As a result, our projects evolve from year to year, reflecting our students’ changing interests and curiosities. By aligning our curriculum with our students’ interests and passions, we create meaningful learning experiences that inspire curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning.

English Language Arts

In our fifth-grade reading units, we cultivate intellectual independence and critical thinking skills. Throughout the academic year, students embark on a captivating journey through meticulously designed units, each aiming to enrich their literature comprehension and enhance their writing prowess. Early on, students explore themes and complexities within fiction, refining their ability to engage in close reading and tackle challenging texts with confidence. As the year progresses, students delve into complex nonfiction, researching debatable topics, evaluating arguments, and crafting their evidence-based perspectives. Students immerse themselves in the fantasy genre in the culminating unit, further honing their critical thinking skills by analyzing character development, thematic elements, and narrative arcs. Through this holistic approach, students deepen their literary understanding and cultivate a profound appreciation for the power of storytelling.

Our fifth-grade writing curriculum is strategically designed to build upon previously learned skills while introducing new learning objectives aligned with fifth grade standards. Students begin by delving into the art of storytelling, learning to infuse their narratives with thematic depth. Unit 2 equips students with the tools to research using primary sources, guiding them in crafting engaging and informative reports. Building upon these foundational skills, the third unit empowers students to understand the dynamic relationship between form and content in their writing. In a poetry unit, students discover the beauty and complexity of Shakespeare’s language, characters, and themes. As part of this immersive experience, students study sonnets, a poetic form deeply rooted in Shakespearean tradition. Finally, in the culminating unit, students learn to construct compelling arguments that effectively balance evidence and analysis, preparing them to persuade and inspire action.

Science

Our fifth-grade science curriculum is thoughtfully designed to engage students in hands-on learning experiences that foster critical thinking and scientific inquiry. In unit 1, students delve into the dynamic processes that shape Earth’s surface, from the majestic peaks of mountains to the winding courses of rivers. Students develop a keen understanding of geological phenomena and the forces that sculpt our planet’s landscapes by engaging in hands-on activities and investigations. In addition to exploring Earth’s physical features, students also delve into the intricate ecosystems of our national parks. Through an engineering lens, students examine the delicate balance of natural environments and the importance of conservation efforts in preserving biodiversity. Students gain a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of living organisms and their habitats by studying real-world examples from national parks. Through this exploration, students develop a sense of stewardship for our natural resources and understand their role in protecting our planet’s biodiversity.

Furthermore, students engage in hands-on investigations, exploring the fascinating world of mixtures and solutions and the properties of matter through a chemistry unit. They delve into chemistry principles, exploring the behavior of different substances and how they interact. Through experiments and observations, students uncover the secrets of mixtures, solutions, and the underlying properties that govern their behavior. Additionally, students delve into the microscopic world of bacteria through laboratory investigations, gaining insight into the role of microorganisms in various ecosystems and the importance of maintaining balance for health and environmental sustainability. Through these multifaceted explorations, students develop a holistic understanding of the natural world, preparing them to become informed citizens and stewards of our planet.

Social Studies

In fifth-grade social studies, students explore the diverse landscapes, cultures, and regions of our world through the lens of geography. Our curriculum is designed to immerse students in a dynamic exploration of global landscapes, fostering a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of our planet’s people and places.

Students develop essential map skills through engaging lessons and interactive activities. They learn to interpret maps, charts, and graphs to analyze spatial patterns and understand geographic relationships. From the Himalayas’ towering peaks to the Sahara Desert’s vast expanses, students embark on virtual journeys to discover the rich tapestry of Earth’s physical features and natural resources.
In addition to exploring the physical geography of our world, students delve into the cultural diversity of different regions, learning about the traditions, languages, and customs that shape the identities of communities around the globe. Through multimedia presentations, guest speakers, and hands-on projects, students gain a profound appreciation for diverse cultures’ unique perspectives and contributions.
