THE FINAL COUNTDOWN! With only one week of school left before we go on...
Middle School is often considered to be a transformational and challenging time. Physical, intellectual, social and emotional changes are rapid and intense.
In fact, in the middle school years, the human brain changes at a rate matched only by the first three years of life. Students walk the tightrope between childhood and adulthood – they are no longer wee babes, but they are not yet ready for the rigor of the upper teen years, either. Often these middle years students are self-conscious, apprehensive, impulsive, and erratic (as well as creative, courageous, opinionated, fearless, and hilarious!). As tweens and young teens seek to distance themselves from their parents, and rely more on their peers, they still need and want nurturing from key adults.
Middle years students require thoughtful, engaged and developmentally appropriate schooling. To deal with all of the competing factors this in-between age brings, most studies have recommended smaller, more flexible schools, more individual attention and guidance from teachers, and more opportunities for reflection and self-expression. Small, K-8 schools enable a combination of close and sustained contact and support with independence, individualization, accountability, and self-reliance – necessary for this dynamic age group.
Our middle school program is designed to harness the potential of adolescents through a combination of a rigorous, research-based academic curriculum with a strong focus on the unique and essential social emotional skills tweens and teens need. We want our graduates to emerge as confident communicators, accomplished thinkers, empathetic friends and partners, adaptable learners, and creative leaders who are ready to enrich their next environment with their gifts.
Our holistic curriculum encompasses nine core discipline areas:
Our middle school math program goes beyond the textbooks and follows the guidelines set by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and is aligned with national standards. We believe in fostering a deep understanding of math concepts and encouraging students to develop critical reasoning skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Whether it’s individual exploration, collaborative small group projects, or whole-class discussions, our math curriculum offers diverse learning experiences. We believe in an integrated approach that helps students see the big picture of math and understand how it relates to the world around them.
In Middle School, we explore a wide range of mathematical fields, from numbers and geometry to algebra, graphing, probability, statistics, trigonometry, spreadsheets, and even basic programming. We’re not just about memorization and algorithms; we’re about nurturing young mathematicians who can think critically and apply their knowledge to solve complex problems. Our classrooms are vibrant spaces where curiosity is encouraged, and students actively engage in inquiry, investigation, and meaningful communication.
To guide our students on this exciting mathematical journey, we use Illustrative Math, as well as additional programs developed by our dedicated math faculty. Grade 6 and 7 participate in an accelerated math program, allowing them to take Algebra 1 in Grade 8.
Our language arts classes are more than just reading and writing; they’re a vibrant journey where literature becomes both art and craft. We are passionate about nurturing young minds to become not just proficient readers and writers but true connoisseurs of language.
In our language arts curriculum, students receive expert instruction in reading strategies, carefully designed to enhance their comprehension skills. We aim to develop higher-level analytical reading skills, enabling students to approach texts with a critical eye and a deep understanding of context and content. We delve into a captivating world of literature, where students explore novels, short stories, essays, plays, and poetry as a community of learners. They share insights, perspectives, and inspirations, making reading a collective and enriching experience.
We understand the importance of choice in reading. That’s why our students also get to select their own readings, and they have dedicated library time to expand their horizons across various genres and authors. This approach not only fosters a love for reading but also empowers them to confidently engage with a wide range of literary forms. This not only helps them recognize universal themes but also allows them to compare styles and ideas across different aspects of their curriculum.
When it comes to writing, our students embark on a creative journey that covers every stage of the writing process. From brainstorming and planning to drafting, revising, and editing for grammar and mechanics, our young writers evolve into skilled wordsmiths. They explore diverse genres, including poetry, memoir, fiction, essays, argumentative writing, and research-based compositions. We emphasize the application of correct and appropriate standard English grammar, both in speaking and writing, ensuring that our students communicate effectively and professionally. We equip our students with age-appropriate vocabulary that allows them to articulate their thoughts with precision and elegance. Lastly, we teach our students to use technology to organize, write, and present their ideas effectively and creatively.
At The Cooper School, we don’t just teach science; we inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. In our science curriculum, students embark on an exciting journey of exploration and discovery. They’re introduced to a diverse array of investigations and current events, providing them with the tools to explore natural phenomena. Through hands-on experiences and engaging labs, they learn to collect and interpret data, formulate hypotheses, and develop theories.
Each year, our students delve into the fascinating world of scientific pioneers, with a particular focus on those who have contributed to our scientific understanding of the natural world, including remarkable individuals from diverse backgrounds, such as people of color and women. This inclusive approach ensures that our students appreciate the rich tapestry of scientific history.
One of the unique features of our science program is the integration of engineering skills. Students don’t just learn the theory; they put it into practice through hands-on engineering projects. These projects are carefully designed to challenge and inspire young minds. Whether it’s designing a more efficient solar cooker, building a model bridge, constructing a robot, or manipulating the neurons of a cockroach, our students get to roll up their sleeves and become problem solvers and innovators.
By incorporating engineering principles, we empower our students to think critically, work collaboratively, and creatively design solutions. This approach not only enriches their scientific education but also equips them with valuable skills that will serve them well in future STEM fields and beyond.
Our Middle School social studies program is more than just a collection of facts and dates; it’s a holistic approach to education. Our ultimate goal is to guide students in their development as culturally competent, active citizens who are well-equipped to thrive in a democratic society. We achieve this through the cultivation of four lenses::
We’re unwavering in our commitment to providing a robust and developmentally appropriate SEL experience for our students. Our approach is multi-faceted, offering a supportive environment that fosters personal growth and well-being. Here’s what makes our SEL program stand out:
Advisory:
As our students face increasing intellectual challenges and academic demands, we recognize the importance of addressing their social and emotional needs. Each middle school student becomes part of a close-knit, multi-age advisory group, led by a dedicated advisor. These groups meet daily. Your student’s advisor isn’t just a mentor; they’re also a key link between the school and your family. Advisors play a vital role in your child’s educational journey. They review grades and report cards, actively participate in parent-teacher conferences, help students set goals, provide guidance on academic and social issues, and directly instruct in SEL. Above all, the advisor’s overarching responsibility is to advocate for and support the best interests of the student.
Life Skills and Human Sexuality:
Our Life Skills and Human Sexuality curriculum is rooted in the latest research findings and trends in adolescent health and development. In this program, students develop cultural competence, explore identity, community, growth and development, sexual orientation, healthy communication, and a deep understanding of sexuality as a complex component of personality.
Executive Function Support:
We understand the importance of fostering essential executive function skills in our students. This class provides a comprehensive approach to teaching skills such as organization, time management, goal setting, planning, and task initiation. These executive function skills are vital for academic success and personal growth, and we believe that mastering them empowers our students to excel not just in middle school but throughout their lives.
SEL Capacity Skill Building:
Drawing inspiration from the core competencies formulated by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), our curriculum covers essential aspects of personal development and social awareness. Students embark on a journey of self-discovery, learning self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills. In addition to CASEL’s core competencies, we emphasize qualities that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving, such as perspective, connection, collaboration, and service to the common good.
