In Grade 6, students embark on new academic challenges, foster leadership skills, and build a strong foundation for future success.

Math

We utilize an accelerated math program in Grade 6, meticulously designed to prepare students for success in Algebra 1 in Grade 8. From the beginning, students thoroughly explore area and surface area concepts, laying a solid foundation for advanced arithmetic with rational numbers.

As students progress, they delve into the intricacies of ratios, rates, and percentages, honing their skills through various representations and real-world applications. Equations and expressions take center stage as students tackle linear equations and delve into the fascinating realm of exponents. Focusing on proportional relationships and practical scenarios such as sales tax and markup, students expand their mathematical horizons to encompass negative numbers and data analysis. Our accelerated program culminates with a synthesis unit, allowing students to apply their newfound knowledge across various contexts.

English Language Arts

In our Grade 6 reading curriculum, students delve into books of their choice, exploring themes of Character, the Power of Nonfiction, and Social Issues through engaging book clubs. Alongside these personal explorations, students come together to discover rich and diverse literature in whole-class novels, weaving connections with Social Studies and collaborative projects. Furthermore, students are encouraged to read critically and closely, analyzing texts with depth and insight to uncover layers of meaning and explore the author’s craft. Through guided discussions and activities, students develop the skills necessary to engage with texts thoughtfully, examining characters, themes, and literary devices with a discerning eye.

In our writing curriculum, Grade 6 students craft powerful narratives in Personal Narrative units, delving into their own life stories with depth and creativity. They then journey into Literary Essays, honing their analytical skills as they explore characters and themes through comparison and contrast. As the year unfolds, students venture into Research-Based Information Writing, delving into topics of teen activism to inspire meaningful change. Supplemental units in Poetry, Fiction Writing, and Journalism further enrich students’ writing repertoire, nurturing their creativity and voice.

Science

In Grade 6 Science, students begin the year by exploring Weather and Water. Through hands-on investigations and experiments, students delve into the dynamic processes that govern Earth’s atmosphere and hydrosphere. From observing weather patterns to exploring the water cycle, students develop a deep understanding of meteorology and hydrology, discovering the interconnectedness of weather and water systems. Furthermore, during an Engineering unit, students investigate Earth’s changing climate, exploring the impact of solar energy and human activities on global weather patterns and climate change. Through inquiry-based learning and real-world applications, students gain insights into the complex relationship between human behavior and environmental sustainability.

Mid-year, students delve into the fascinating realm of biology. As they investigate diverse life forms in the Diversity of Life unit and explore migration patterns, students gain a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of living organisms and their environments. They complete a Biomimicry project, drawing inspiration from nature to solve human design challenges and create innovative solutions. Lastly, in studying human systems, students explore the intricate mechanisms of the human body and the impact of viruses on human health, culminating in an engaging exploration of outbreak alerts and epidemiology in the Virus Unit. Through inquiry-based learning and interdisciplinary connections, Grade 6 Science empowers students to become informed global citizens equipped with the knowledge and skills to address complex scientific challenges in the world around them.
