In Grade 7, students delve deeper into their studies, exploring advanced concepts and cultivating independent thinking.

Math

Grade 7 marks the second year of our accelerated math curriculum, where students comprehensively explore mathematical concepts and applications. This year begins with a focus on transformational geometry, where students study rigid transformations, congruence, and scale drawings, laying the groundwork for understanding concepts such as dilations and similarity. As students progress, they expand their proficiency in working with linear equations and exploring expressions and proportional relationships in greater depth. They develop the ability to express linear relationships using equations, tables, and graphs, enhancing their analytical skills and making connections across various representations.

Students deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts by exploring systems of equations, linear relationships in data analysis, and the fundamental properties of exponents. They encounter orders of magnitude, scientific notation, and irrational numbers. Students synthesize their knowledge and skills through engaging activities and real-world applications, culminating in a comprehensive understanding of mathematical principles and their practical applications. This accelerated curriculum empowers students to excel in mathematics and prepares them for future academic challenges.

English Language Arts

In Grade 7, our reading and writing curriculum is designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills through various engaging units. In our early units, students begin by reading realistic fiction novels, focusing on characterization. They examine how authors intricately craft multifaceted characters enriched with weaknesses and strengths and investigate complex character relationships. In writing, students dive into the art of crafting realistic fiction, exploring character development, plot structure, and narrative techniques to bring their stories to life. Mid-year, students shift focus to the art of argumentation, where students delve into the principles of persuasive writing and oral advocacy.

Through analysis of persuasive texts and interactive debates, students learn to construct compelling arguments and effectively communicate their viewpoints. In reading, students explore essential research skills, equipping them with the tools and strategies needed to conduct effective research and critically evaluate sources. Students also engage in historical fiction book clubs, immersing themselves in rich narratives set in different historical periods and exploring the intersection of history and literature. The third trimester introduces students to the world of poetry. They delve into various forms and styles, exploring language’s profound expressive capabilities. They engage with diverse Shakespearean works, enriching their understanding of many poetic forms and techniques. Lastly, students explore the art of reading and writing graphic novels, delving into this dynamic literary genre’s unique storytelling methods and visual narratives.

Science

In Grade 7 Science, students embark on an exciting exploration of various scientific concepts and phenomena, delving into the mysteries of our planet and beyond. The curriculum kicks off with a focus on planetary science, where students delve into the unique characteristics of planets, including Earth, and explore the geological features of Mars. Through hands-on activities and investigations, students gain insights into planetary formation, the intricacies of geology, surface features, and the potential for life beyond Earth.

Furthermore, students explore the dynamic interactions between populations and ecosystems, gaining a deeper understanding of ecological principles and the interconnectedness of living organisms and their environments. They investigate ecosystems, food webs, and population dynamics, gaining insights into the delicate balance of life on Earth.

In addition to planetary science and ecology, Grade 7 students explore chemical interactions and reactions. Students investigate the properties of matter, chemical reactions, and the role of energy in chemical processes. Through hands-on experiments and inquiry-based learning, students develop a deeper understanding of chemical phenomena and their applications in everyday life.

Social Studies

From the early days of colonization to the dawn of industrialization, students delve into the diverse tapestry of American history, exploring the key events, figures, and movements that have shaped the nation. Through engaging lessons and interactive activities, students gain insights into the challenges and triumphs of America’s past, from the founding of the thirteen colonies to the struggles for independence and westward expansion.

Our comprehensive curriculum invites students to explore the rich cultural heritage of Native American civilizations, the impact of European exploration and colonization, and the development of colonial society and government. As students progress, they examine the causes and consequences of significant events such as the American Revolution, the establishment of the United States Constitution, and the expansion of democracy in the early republic.

Furthermore, students delve into the social, economic, and technological transformations of the 19th century, exploring the rise of industrialization, the expansion of slavery and its impact on American society, and the struggles for social justice and equality. Through primary source analysis, research projects, and multimedia resources, students develop a deeper understanding of the complexities and contradictions of American history, preparing them to become informed and engaged citizens in an ever-changing world.
