Let the clubs begin!

This week during our first ‘Hawk’ week, students were able to choose and begin participating in afternoon clubs. These clubs will meet Wednesday and Thursday during ‘Hawk’ weeks. The clubs include the Naturalist Club, Community Service Club, Spirit Club and Board Game Club. Clubs will be rotated by trimester, allowing students to experience and try new clubs throughout the school year.

Students also participated in their first week of our Social Emotional Learning program. This curriculum is done within advisory groups and is a time for students to learn new skills to help them become positive members of our community. This week was all about mindfulness and sense of self.

Enjoy the long weekend and we’re looking forward to seeing you all back on Tuesday!

Math:

Last week, we began creating and using expressions to find different volumes and took a quiz covering the volume of rectangular prisms on Thursday. Next week, we’ll review for and take our Unit 1 Test! I’ll send out some more information about this early next week!

ELA:

This week in ELA, 5th grade readers examined Hello, Universe through the lens of character perspective. We considered how to analyze possible themes of the novel using text evidence. In civil discourse, we created identity pages to humanize our community. We then took part in small group discussions around the merits of homework and a whole group discourse on unfair birth order stereotypes.

Next week, readers will develop their ideas about Hello, Universe in book clubs, learning the art of active listening and building on one another’s ideas. Similar skills will be explored in civil discourse as we unpack our first civil conversation on the news and environmental responsibility.

Social Studies:

Students have been learning about parts of a map and their uses. Now that we have finished the introduction to maps, students have been working on a project of creating their own map of their own “world.” They were able to design, draw and create what it looks like, while also using all parts of the map they have learned about in their design. Once these projects have been completed, we will be moving onto hemispheres and geographical features.

Science:

Fifth graders finished the maps of their neighborhood this week. They learned about the importance of a map legend and what a compass rose represents. They used their memory and google maps to create their maps. The fifth graders also contemplated how different landforms on Earth’s surface were formed. They looked at Earth’s continents and observed how they fit together. Next week, they will experiment with soil, rocks, and water to learn about what soil is made of and the different forms of weathering.
