Let the clubs begin!

This week during our first ‘Hawk’ week, students were able to choose and begin participating in afternoon clubs. These clubs will meet Wednesday and Thursday during ‘Hawk’ weeks. The clubs include the Naturalist Club, Community Service Club, Spirit Club and Board Game Club. Clubs will be rotated by trimester, allowing students to experience and try new clubs throughout the school year.

Students also participated in their first week of our Social Emotional Learning program. This curriculum is done within advisory groups and is a time for students to learn new skills to help them become positive members of our community. This week was all about mindfulness and sense of self.

Enjoy the long weekend and we’re looking forward to seeing you all back on Tuesday!

Math:

Last week, we used our knowledge of rigid transformations to compare objects and their sizes to determine similarity and congruence. Next week, we’ll discuss congruency between shapes before analyzing triangles, their angles, and why they always add up to 180!

ELA:

7th grade writers finished the final draft of their contact sports essays with a strong understanding of essay structure and well reasoned arguments. With these skills in tow, writers pondered a new subtopic centered around their own interests: Which activities/extracurriculars are the most beneficial to teenagers? They began researching the benefits of particular activities for youth, from fishing to traveling. In civil discourse, our community took part in productive conversations about gendered toys and birth order stereotypes.

Next week, argument writers will consider counter arguments and objections to their opinions as they move into drafting and revisions. In civil discourse, civilians will consider topics in women’s rights and develop the skill of putting our conversations in context.

Social Studies:

Seventh grade did a great job with their study of the human migrations from Asia into the Americas and we began learning about the first peoples of North America. Students began a project on tribes of North America and will be researching and teaching their fellow classmates about the tribes they chose. This is a great way for students to see just how diverse all of the North American tribes were. Once we finish North American tribes we will be moving into Central America.

Science:

Seventh graders learned about the Solar System this week! They finished up their Solar System posters and taught each other about the solar system. They compared the planets’ atmospheres, temperatures, and surfaces to contemplate where in the Solar System we could possibly find life and colonize. The seventh graders also learned about exoplanets and considered if life could be found outside our Solar System. Next week, they will have their first quiz about the Solar System and possible colonization out of Biosphere 1.
