Let the clubs begin!

This week during our first ‘Hawk’ week, students were able to choose and begin participating in afternoon clubs. These clubs will meet Wednesday and Thursday during ‘Hawk’ weeks. The clubs include the Naturalist Club, Community Service Club, Spirit Club and Board Game Club. Clubs will be rotated by trimester, allowing students to experience and try new clubs throughout the school year.

Students also participated in their first week of our Social Emotional Learning program. This curriculum is done within advisory groups and is a time for students to learn new skills to help them become positive members of our community. This week was all about mindfulness and sense of self.

Enjoy the long weekend and we’re looking forward to seeing you all back on Tuesday!

Math:

Last week in Algebra 1, we explored using spreadsheets to organize data and compute basic analyses. Next week, we’ll use the data and statistics we can create from spreadsheets to create more data displays. We’ll also discuss outliers and their effects on a data display.

ELA:

8th grade completed their violent video game argument essays this week. With a deep understanding of convincing argumentation, they began a deep researching process around self-selected hot button topics in technology. In civil discourse, youth citizens considered the impact of banning phones in schools and birth order stereotypes in their first critical conversations.

Next week, writers will continue drafting and revisions as they pull from their research. In civil discourse, we will consider issues around gun control and the importance of putting conversations in context.

Social Studies:

The eighth grade class has been learning about how society developed and progressed and its importance to the topic of study, world history beginning in 1750. We have talked about past events and discussed learning from different perspectives. We are now moving into 1750 events and how many of these events are related to one another, even though they happened in different parts of the world.

Science:

Eighth graders experimented with acceleration and speed this week! They contemplated how distance and time affect the speed of an object. They learned how to calculate the acceleration and speed of an object by finding the change in distance divided by the change in time. The eighth graders also had an opportunity to observe a sheep brain dissection, learning about the different parts of the brain.
