Super Second Graders!

Math is Fun

As Second Grade’s knowledge of graphs, addition equations and subtraction equations has grown we have enjoyed having fun with them. Last week we created a bar graph from a tally chart our parents created of their favorite subject when they were in school. This week we are continuing to build bar graphs and picture graphs from data we are given. We have also created addition and subtraction equations from graphs to help us find the difference or sum of our data. We enjoyed playing games with our addition and subtraction equations such as, “Capture the Square” , “How Close?” and “Shake and Spill”!

Editing

Second grade students have written wonderful small moment stories! This week we focused on editing our stories. We used an editing pen to change our vocabulary, check punctuation and capital letters, add dialogue, and add feelings and internal thoughts to our stories. We often write stories using a timeline and forgetting to add our feelings at that moment. We also learned that our vocabulary in second grade is much larger than it used to be and therefor we can use stronger words to make our story more interesting!

Water Cycle

In science students are learning all about water and climate. We have loved experimenting with water! Second grade experimented with water this week by identifying different temperatures of water. Students were given three cups filled with hot, cold, and room temperature water and had to make an educated guess using the tools they were given. We observed that we can find the temperatures of water with a thermometer, by observing condensation and steam, and by touch. This week we also learned how the water cycle works and why it is important. The water cycle shows the continuous movement of water within the earth and atmosphere. It is important for providing water, regulating weather, and moving nutrients, and much more. Students each drew and labeled their own water cycle this week and enjoyed learning our water cycle song!
