To New Beginnings

“The beginning is the most important part of the work.”

As we step into a new school year with new friends, new classes, new procedures, and new roles, it’s critical to remember the importance of the beginning, of uncertainty, of feeling uncomfortable. It’s in these moments that we set the tone, intention, and energy for the rest of the year. For some of us, this is one of MANY beginnings we’ve had at TCS – but we all still have learning to do. We work out the kinks, set our procedures and routines, create goals, form habits, and forge authentic relationships. The TCS Middle School team has been hard at work to make this beginning as seamless as possible – and I could not be more excited. It’s sure to be a fantastic school year!

AG

Math:

I’m so excited to dive into our 6th grade math content next week! We’ll begin with using tiles to understand shapes and their areas before moving into the deconstruction and rearranging of shapes to find their areas – particularly with parallelograms!

ELA:

6th grade begins their first unit next week as we practice the art of annotating novels. We will practice “marking up” short stories and the purpose of annotating before finally beginning our novel study in Roald Dahl’s Boy.

Social Studies:

I am excited to begin this year of social studies with the sixth graders and our study of ancient civilizations. We will start with prior knowledge of the ancient world and begin studying humanity and how we became civilized. This will encompass hunter gatherer societies and how the movement of tribes led to the first civilizations.

Science:

Sixth graders learned about lab procedures, materials, and lab partners this week. They put it all to practice by building a tower out of spaghetti that could hold a marshmallow. They will learn about the scientific method next week by building propelled gliders that will fly across the room on a fishing line. The sixth graders will also launch into their weather and climate next week!

Important Dates:
