Storms can’t stop us!

Everyone has done a great job handling and preparing themselves for a hectic week with storms looming over us. We hope everyone stays safe and completes all work that has been assigned over the google document that has been sent by the middle school staff. All E-learning will be sent to parents emails, also the link to the work will be on all math google classrooms. As we move into October, please check the school calendar for all of the upcoming events during this month.

Math:

This week, we wrapped up our unit on fractions and division by beginning our review work. Our test on this unit will be Monday, September 30th. After that, we’ll begin our third unit of study on fraction operations including addition, subtraction, more multiplication, and division.

ELA:

This week in ELA, 5th grade drafted theses for their essays based on a mini documentary. We discussed the art of crafting a thesis from evidence and how our essay ‘builds’ off of the claims and reasons within our thesis. We also prepared for our first grammar test – reviewing variations of subject and predicates plus types of sentences.

Next week, essayists will complete their mini essays and develop a thesis for Hello, Universe based on their theories about theme or character. We will begin our first vocabulary unit of the year.

Social Studies:

We have begun working on western hemisphere geography and will begin with learning about our country, the United States. We start with learning about all fifty states, their location and that will lead into their next project, choosing a state (outside of the southeast) and doing a research project on the state they choose.

Science:

Fifth graders learned about topographic maps this week! They made their own topographic maps using clay as a model. They also started learning about National Parks using the NPS website and google maps. Next week, they will learn about deposition and erosion using sand tables, as well as start brainstorming for their National Park project.
