In the midst of projects, end-of-trimester assessments, and all of the other things life throws at us, our wonderful TCS middle schoolers hosted the spookiest and most creative Halloween Carnival in our backyard on Tuesday. From haunted houses, poke-the-ghost darts, and a nurses stations to spooky musical chairs, bowling, and t-shirt sales to fundraise for the Maui fires (+ so much more), the middle school students poured their hearts and souls into making this carnival a core memory for the elementary school students. After seeing so many smiles on faces, hearing giggles and spooky shrieks, I’d say they blew all of the expectations out of the water! Growing up in Indiana, Halloween wasn’t widely celebrated like it is here in Charleston, and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my first Halloween here! Proud is an understatement.

What’s happening in Science?
Sixth graders finished up their weather and climate study this week! They presented their TedTalks which were amazing! They began their new study on thermal energy. They are solving a case study questioning what type of heating system would be most effective. The sixth graders contemplated what “temperature” actually is and how it impacts different substances. Next week, they will continue to learn more about thermodynamics and its impact on our lives.
What’s up in ELA?
In 6th grade, fresh off completing Bridge to Terabithia, readers worked on some practical summarizing skills of our novel and other works of short fiction. Be sure to ask your student about how to effectively use “Somebody Wanted But So Then” to recount a story’s most important parts. Brilliant new worlds inspired by Terabithia were turned in and shared with high energy. World builders described their settings with detail and the visuals were impressive!
Next week, 6th graders will make a very smooth transition into a writing unit focused on formal literary essays. All of the devices and literary topics we learned from our novel will be incorporated into thoughtful character and compare/contrast essays! We will also do our usual swap from grammar back to vocabulary study for the next 4 weeks.
What’s going on in Math?
This week, 6th graders practiced solving multi-operation fraction problems involving adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing before they took their mid-unit Assessment on Thursday. On Friday, they began exploring decimal operations by making shopping decisions. Next week, students will represent and practice solving decimal addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems before exploring division of whole numbers.
What’s happening in Social Studies?
This week, the sixth graders finished their studies of Ancient China. They learned about the unification of China and the Han Dynasty before being asked to map the Silk Road to learn about the connection of Ancient China with the rest of the world.
Next week, the students will be assessed on Ancient China before moving into Ancient Greece. Students will study the early greek culture before diving into Athens and Sparta and comparing the different lifestyles.
