SECOND GRADE NEWSLETTER

Phonics

Our phonics professors have been HARD at work this week. We are studying the hard and soft C and G sounds and working on recognizing patterns in words. We learned a song that helped us spark our memories of what vowels are most likely to come after a soft c and g. Second graders became teachers themselves and worked with partners explaining to the other how a word is spelled and why. They have caught on to these strategies well!

Social Studies

This week scholars are finishing up our Kiawah/Charleston Settlers unit. We have compared and contrasted the different reasons why the settlers’ clothes and shelter might or might not work in our environment/climate. Children were able to take a deep look into how the settlers adapted into the New Land and were given the opportunity to write descriptive notes on what they observed about their culture.

Reading

Second graders have been loving reading with a partner! This gives students an opportunity to teach and learn from each other while sharing the joys of reading. Children can be wonderful mentors for one another, and working collaboratively enables scholars to share their strengths and encourage others to do the same.
