Spring Has Sprung!

The Purpose of Clothing
Kindergarteners explored further the purposes of clothing this week. Students were excited to share all of the things they knew and all of the connections they were making. We loved hearing students make sense of how the masks we wore this year were used for the purpose of protection! Using what we learned about clothing used for communication, students designed a new school uniform that communicates what school they attend! After their first big design, students got even more excited to try their hand at some formal wear of their own. We can’t wait to show off the creativity spilling out of our classroom at our Fashion Show later this year!

Numbers to 20
Brave mathematicians have been working hard identifying and using partner numbers that make 10. As these numbers have gotten easier and easier for students, we jumped to numbers through 20 this week! Students used number grids to identify patterns in double digit numbers, counting tools to work out problems, and practiced writing numbers 11-20. We are very proud of the number knowledge in our classroom!

Snap! Crackle! Pop!
This week, budding poets built on their understanding of poetry by tapping into their five senses. Students reviewed the five senses through read alouds and class discussions. Students read and wrote poetry that included sensory language. We then spent time exploring how being mindful of each of our senses when writing can lift the level of our poetry helping to paint a vivid image in their reader’s head. Young writers especially enjoyed tapping into their sense of hearing by using special sound words called “onomatopoeia”. Ask your Kindergartener to tell you what they know about these fun words!
